Friends of the Kamaka family will perform at a concert honoring 100 years of business for the famed Kamaka Hawaii ukulele company on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the historic Hawaii Theatre at 5:00 p.m. The concert will kick off The Hawaiian Classics concert series presented by Hawaiian Springs – The Water for your life.
Performers will include Jake Shimabukuro, Benny Chong, Paula Fuga, Side Order Band, Hookena, Kama Hopkins, Momi Kahawaiolaa, Herb Ohta Sr., Herb Ohta Jr. and Aidan James. Performing halau will be Hula Hui O Kapunahala and Halau I ka Wekiu. The sons of the founder of Kamaka Hawaii, Samuel Kaialiilii Kamaka, who started the company in 1916, will make an appearance. Fred Kamaka Sr. and Samuel Kamaka Jr., both now in their 90s, are still actively involved in the business their father began and are icons of the Hawaii music community.
Kamaka Hawaii is one of the world’s most respected manufacturers of musical instruments, having handcrafted ukuleles for 100 years (1916 – 2016) utilizing native Hawaiian koa wood. Known for meticulous craftsmanship and depth of tone, Kamaka ukuleles are treasured and collected throughout the world. Founder Samuel Kaialiilii Kamaka created the distinctive “pineapple” ukulele that was patented in 1928.
Beginning October 16th, the Hawaiian Springs Hawaiian Classics Concert Series will feature monthly performances by true Legends of Hawaii, showcasing traditional and contemporary Hawaiian classics.
